There are some days when you are sitting there listening to your mp3 player for white noise and distraction, when something plucks you from your haze and you are driven to listen to that track on repeat. I treasure these moments - the butterflies, the tension, the contemplation. This is what makes music powerful.
And I totally had a moment this evening listening to Mogwai. Give it a whirl and see if it moves you like it did me.
Last night was a standard quiet weekend night: we were watching Shopgirl, snuggled under a blanket with Freckles at our feet, when the strangest sound was heard from far away. I heard the drums and knew it couldn't be from the karaoke bar from across the street - it was too melodic and interesting. We peeked through the blinds and saw a mass of people swelling the corner of Olive and Bellevue - City Market never looked so packed.
Then we heard the horns.
As we saw the procession directed up the street by a whimsical band leader, the march toward The Crescent (the karaoke bar across the street from us) seemed too inviting. I grabbed the camera and threw on some shoes. Dylan grabbed Freckles and we were off.
At first, I was shy and was shooting from across the street. Then I asked myself how often you would see something like this on your own street. Shyness overcome, I threw myself in the middle of the crowd and began to shoot....
Now I can say that I've seen a Balkan brass procession on my street. Why in the world would I ever want to move away from Capitol Hill?
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your music player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.) Inspired by Stephanie.
Okay, why not:
1. Samurai Sword - The Microphones
2. Crazy Love, Vol II - Paul Simon
3. Delicious - Plug
4. Pouncelciot - Venetian Snares
5. Suffer - The Smashing Pumpkins
6. Kimi Wa Tsumannai - Bogdan Raczynski
7. You're in the Air - REM
8. My Roots are Strong and Deep - The Microphones
9. Tame - The Pixes
10. Shake the Disease - Depeche Mode
Now I guess everyone knows how off-the-charts my musical tastes are. So if I were an astrologer I would read this as meaning I'm nuts.
